County officials assess damage at Isiolo Girls School after fire incident

Isiolo County officials visited Isiolo Girls’ High School to assess the extent of the damage caused by a fire incident that broke out destroying one dormitory completely on Sunday night.

Isiolo Governor Ibrahim Guyo sent a team of officers led by County Secretary Dadhe Boru to conduct an urgent assessment of the destruction at the school’s dormitory whose cause was yet to be established.

 Boru said the visit to School was to facilitate the smooth resumption of school operations as students had been sent home in the aftermath of the fire.

"Form Four girls have to be well prepared for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) that will commence next month," Boru said.

 He conveyed the governor’s concern about the unfortunate incident and promised to take swift action to have the girls back in school and ensure measures to curb fire accidents in learning institutions are put in place.

He said the technical personnel with expertise to evaluate and make estimates on the amount of loss and the cost of repairs required will give their report and recommendations for the government and other support agencies to plan for interventions.

"Despite the fact that secondary education is not a devolved function, the county government is willing to provide relief services to the school, especially to affected students who lost all their belongings in the weekend inferno," he said.

The school's head of boarding Dorren Mboroki said 159 students were directly affected, with most of their possessions completely destroyed by the fire.

"Unfortunately, nothing was rescued during the inferno despite efforts to salvage students’ property," she said.

Boru was accompanied by Chief Officers in charge of Special Programs, Hassan Abdulahi, Isaiah Epuri (Livestock Development) and Batula Ali Maalim (Public Service Management).

Abdulahi said  his department would step in to offer assistance once the assessment was completed.

According to the school’s principal Florence Achacha, there were no casualties reported among the  467 students present during the unfortunate accident.
