Two trucks have been impounded at Mlolongo police station after police intercepted them transporting copper wires along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Police said the motor vehicles were intercepted following a tip off from the public within Mlolongo Township on Monday.

The copper wires are property of Kenya Power Company, a state parastatal, the police said.

The occupants of the trucks were released on police cash bail at the station hours after the arrest.

Some KPLC officials and DCI officers were at the scene where the motor vehicles have been detained when the Star visited Mlolongo police station on Tuesday.

The vehicles were transporting an assortment of scrap metal alongside the copper wire and damaged motor vehicles' batteries when they were intercepted.

Multiple police sources told the Star that DCI detectives attached to Mlolongo police station were investigating the matter. They are the ones who made the arrests.

"The two lorries were intercepted within Mlolongo Township yesterday (Monday) at around 3.30pm. They had ferried the items from Busia, and those who were found in the vehicles said they were taking the scrap to Nairobi," a police officer at Mlolongo police station told the Star.

"We asked them why they were past Nairobi in Mlolongo town, and they couldn't explain. They were released on police cash bail."

Some copper wires were on the ground after they were removed from one of the trucks, which also had damaged motor vehicle batteries.

Beside the copper wires, there were an assortment of wires and parts suspected to be of electronics, such as refrigerators.
