A multi-agency team formed by the National Government to deal with the theft of motor vehicles in Makueni County has started bearing fruit.

Makueni County Commissioner  Henry Wafula said since its formation, no vehicle has been stolen in the area.

The team comprises officers from the National Government Administration, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, the Police, and National Security Intelligence (NIS).

Wafula said the team is involved in patrolling the main roads in the county to end the stealing of motorcycles and vehicles.

He said this outside his office in Wote town, where he announced they have successfully arrested three suspects believed to be involved in the stealing of motorcycles in the county.

“In the past month, we have had theft of motorcycles and boda boda riders killed. We have arrested three suspects in Mtwapa at the Coast and are in custody,” Wafula said.

“We have also involved officers from DCI and the Special Research Crime Unit (SRCU) to establish whether the syndicate is only in Makueni or is spread in the country.”

He said one motorcycle was found in Moyale in Marsabit County and will be brought to Makueni.

“Since May 2024, there has been no vehicle that has been stolen. If there is one that has been stolen, tell me. It has reached the time when motorcycles are being stolen and riders killed. That is why we have taken up the matter and will not allow such incidents to continue,” Wafula added.

The suspects appeared before Resident Magistrate Evans Mbicha in Makindu Law Court on Monday but couldn’t take a plea because the investigating officer asked for more time to conduct thorough investigations.

The suspects are facing murder charges and will be brought to court on September 24, 2024.
