Four people have been arrested for allegedly slaughtering someone’s camel in Athi River, Machakos County.

Athi River Township assistant chief Martin Ngomo said the quartet was smoked from their hideouts at Sofia village within Athi River Township hours after the incident.

Ngomo said the suspects, who included three men and a woman, were captured on camera while slaughtering the camel near a children's centre at about 7 a.m. on Sunday.

“Several camels belonging to a known trader were being offloaded from a trailer at an abattoir in Slota village when one of them escaped to Sofia village within Athi River Township on Sunday. A group of men then gave it a chase before catching up with it near Bondeni slum, they slaughtered it,” Ngomo said.

He spoke to the Star at his office in Athi River town on Monday.

Ngomo said those who were arrested had been caught on camera by neighbours who witnessed as they slaughtered the camel.

“I was called, and when I got to the scene of the incident, those who were slaughtering the animal had fled the scene,” he said.

He said the woman was among those captured on camera standing at the scene as the men slaughtered the camel. The three other suspects were equally taped.

The four were locked up at Athi River police station.

Ngomo said they recovered the meat, which was later disposed of at the abattoir.

The assailants, however, escaped with one of the camel’s limbs.

In another incident within the same Athi River Township sublocation, a man was reportedly killed by a night guard early Saturday.

The deceased, according to sources, was hit on the head by the night guard after he, in company of a woman, was found near a club in Makadara shopping centre. The incident is said to have happened at around 5.00am.

“The deceased, a resident of Sofia village within Athi River Township, is said to have been in the company of a woman when the incident happened at around 5.00am on Saturday.

The night guard confronted the two and asked them what they were doing near the club at that time,” a source privy to the incident confided to the Star.

“The woman reportedly replied to the night guard rudely before an argument ensued between the two. It was when the man intervened by trying to defend the woman when the guard reportedly hit him on the head using a rungu. He collapsed before he was rushed to Kitengela Level 4 hospital in Kajiado County. He was later referred to the Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” he said.

It was after the man was pronounced dead by KNH management that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives attached to the Athi River police station arrested the suspect.

He has since been locked up at the same police station as the sleuths launch a probe into the incident.
