National government leaders from Lower Eastern have held a meeting to assess implementation of the region’s economic blueprint, which President William Ruto signed with the community in 2022.

Mwala MP and UDA National Organising Secretary Vincent Musyoka convened the meeting, which was coordinated by PSs Jonathan Mueke (Livestock Development) and Teresia Mbaika (Devolution).

Following the presentation of the blueprint by the Technical Team Chair, Prof. Emmanuel Mutisya, who took the leaders through the blueprint, Musyoka emphasised on the need for a comprehensive review of the economic blueprint so that we align it with current development realities and national government priority focus.

“President William Ruto has the region at heart and is keen on meeting the commitments he made to the community,” he said.

Mueke and Mbaika noted that it was important for all government officials from the region to come together and share ideas and lobby for high-impact projects.

They emphasised that leaders lobby for government projects world-over.

Leaders at the meeting observed that the region has been neglected by previous administrations and pointed out that there was a need for a united front to push for the interests of Ukambai.

They said it was time to set aside our political differences like other communities have done and harness collective efforts for the community’s inclusive growth and shared prosperity.

The meeting agreed that there was a need for a mid-term review of the blueprint to take stock of the status of its implementation and agree on priority projects in the next financial year.

The review will profile all the projects in the region, the status of those ongoing, and the ones that are planned for, with a core focus on the development enablers as outlined in the Bottom-up Economic Transformations Agenda (BETA).

The leaders also affirmed the need for civic education and grassroots engagement activities to communicate government policy and achievements as well as to establish confidence in government.

Present included MPs Nimrod Mbai (Kitui East), Rachel Nyamai (Kitui South), Joshua Mwalyo (Masinga), University Councils Chairperson Prof. Emmanuel Mutisya, TANATHI chair Regina Ndambuki, Brigadier Richard Mbithi and chairperson, Kenya Water Institute; Ben Muasya and Commissioner, Commission on Revenue Allocation Moses Banda among others.
