Machakos County Vocational Training chief officer Dr. Julliane Wambua (L), Governor Wavinya Ndeti, and Education CECM Dr. Consolata Mutisya during the first phase of Machakos Youth Empowerment Program at her White House office premises on February 7, 2025.

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti says it pains her every time she sees young people idling on the roadside and outside shops from morning to evening because they lack skills that can enable them to earn a living.

Ndeti said she is determined to ensure that more youth acquire technical skills in the county so as to improve their living standards through decent livelihoods.

“About three weeks ago, a transformation journey of these young men and women began. I am sure each of you has a positive story of how three weeks have changed your lives,” Ndeti said.

The county CEO spoke during the first phase of the Machakos Youth Empowerment Program at her White House office premises on Friday.

Some 1, 000 recruits passed out during the exercise after they successfully completed their orientation drill at the newly established Machakos Youth Service.

Machakos Youth Service is a newly established formation by Governor Ndeti’s administration, a concept borrowed from the renowned National Youth Service.

The National Youth Service is an organization under the Government of Kenya. It was established in 1964 to train young people in important national matters.

“Several years ago, when I was the Assistant Minister for Youth Affairs, I developed a strong passion for empowering young people. That was when this dream was conceived, and I promised God that the day I will find myself in a position of influence, I will actualize it. Through the mercies and the grace of God, that day is finally here!” Ndeti said.

“My goal is to gradually end the culture by equipping many young people skills that can help them achieve their God-given dreams. The three – weeks boot camp covered numerous critical areas for training that included physical exercise,” Ndeti said.

Ndeti said the physical exercise made the youth physically fit. It aimed at strengthening both their bodies and minds.

“We are equipping you for yourself, Machakos, Kenya, Africa, and the world. I’m grateful for the national government through the NYS for the support it has accorded us in this programme,” Ndeti said.

She said the youth had been trained on fire response and first aid, among other lifesaving techniques, to enable them to be ready to handle emergencies whenever they arise.

“Fire incidents are becoming a common phenomenon in homesteads and places of work. My sons and daughters were equipped with skills to handle fire-related incidents,” Ndeti said.

She said the inability to communicate keeps locking out many people out of potential opportunities.

“Our tutors sharpened your ability to express yourselves effectively both personally and professionally,” Ndeti said.

“As we transition to the next phase of the Machakos Youth Service Empowerment program, I have a strong conviction that everyone is looking forward to acquiring and perfecting the skills that will open doors for them in the job market!”

Ndeti said lack of financial literacy is the greatest killer of financial freedom.

She said the youth had been offered tailored insights on managing finances, savings, and entrepreneurship to secure their future.

“Today, we are opening a new chapter! You will transition to the respective Vocational Training Centres where you will be offered specialised training in various areas,” Ndeti said.

She said the youth would report to the vocational training centers immediately.

They include Masii, Kyemutheke, Mitaboni, Kituluni, and Matuu vocational training centers.

Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko lauded the governor for what she termed as investing in a noble cause.

Ouko said the Machakos Youth Service programme was already transforming hundreds of youth in Machakos County, noting that their lives will never be the same again.

“We saw these children three weeks ago, they were totally different from the way they are today. We are seeing a new crop of Kenyans,” Ouko said.

She added, “As the in charge of security and coordinator of national government, I’m the happiest because these youth today, where would they be? Where have they been? How would their lives be? Now they are done with their three weeks headed to vocational training institutions.”

Ouko said after three months, the youth will become plumbers, mechanics, electricians, salonists, among others.

“They will be qualified Kenyans with certificates in their hands, courtesy of Governor Wavinya Ndeti,” Ouko said.
