A medical unit for newborns to reduce maternal and infant mortality has been commissioned at the Kitui County Referral Hospital.
The Little Angels Newborn Unit, funded by the Catholic Medical Mission Board, an international NGO, was opened by Governor Julius Malombe on Wednesday.
The ceremony was attended by the CMMB international president Mary Powers and also marked the commissioning of the Nuu modern maternity wing in Mwingi Central subcounty whose construction was supported by the NGO.
The Little Angels unit is equipped with advanced neonatal care tools, including continuous positive airway pressure machines, and enhances the Kitui hospital’s ability to treat preterm and critically ill newborns.
“A newborn unit is not just a place where tiny babies fight for survival but a sanctuary where miracles unfold daily, and love is measured in grams and heartbeats while a maternity unit is a place where miracles are born every day,” Malombe said.
He underscored maternal and newborn health care as a critical component of a thriving society, as it ensures the well-being of mothers and their infants while reducing deaths.
Losing a mother
during pregnancy, labour or childbirth was one too many, he said.
