With only six months to the August 9, elections, top presidential candidates have turned their focus and strategies to Nairobi with an aim of capturing the majority of elective seats.
Nairobi has 17 sub-counties and 85 wards.
In the 2019 Population and Housing Census, Nairobi had 4,397,073 million residents.
In the last General Elections, according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission( IEBC), the registered number of voters in Nairobi increased to 2,251,929 from 1,732,288 in 2013.
Orange Democratic Movement ( ODM) Party‘s presidential candidate Raila Odinga garnered 828,826 votes while Jubilee’s candidate President Uhuru Kenyatta’s got 791,291 votes.
Narrowing it down to sub-counties, Jubilee party bagged 9 sub-counties, ODM got 7 while Wiper Democratic Movement got one.
Breakdown
1. Mathare
In the 2017 General Elections, Mathare had 115,559 voters. ODM’s Anthony Tom Oluoch won its parliamentary seat.
It has five wards; Kiamaiko , Mlango Kubwa, Ngei, Mabatini and Huruma.
2. Starehe
Starehe constituency in 2017 had 166,397 voters. MP Charles Njagua won the parliamentary seat.
Nairobi South, Pangani, Ngara, Landimawe and Nairobi Central are the five wards found within the sub-county.
3. Makadara
The sub-county is currently under the leadership of former Mayor and ODM partyNairobi chairman George Aladwa. It had 126,648 voters in the 2017 General Elections.
It has four wards including Viwandani, Harambee, Makongeni and Maringo/ Hamza.
4. Kamkunji
Jubilee’s Yusuf Hassan Abdi is the area MP and has five wards; Eastleigh South, Eastleigh North, Airbase, California, and Pumwani.
In the last elections, the sub-county had 120,266 voters.
5. Embakasi West
George Theuri of the Jubilee party is the current Mp of the sub-county. It has four wards; Kariobangi South, Mowlem, Umoja One and Umoja Two.
In 2017, the sub-county had 126,682 registered voters.
6. Embakasi East
ODM’s Paul Ongili, alias Babu Owino, is the area MP.
Embakasi East has five wards consisting of Upper Savannah, Lower Savannah, Mihango, Embakasi and Utawala.
According to IEBC data, there were 140,740 voters in the last elections
7. Embakasi North
With five wards including Kariobangi North, Dandora Area I, Dandora Area II, Dandora Area III, and Dandora Area IV, the sub-county has Jubilee’s James Gakuya as its MP.
Embakasi North Constituency had 104,253 voters in the 2017 General Elections.
8. Embakasi South
Having 150,314 voters in the 2017 General Elections, the sub-county has Julius Musili Mawathe of the Wiper party as its Mp.
It has five wards Kware, Imara Daima, Kwa Njenga, Kwa Rueben and Pipeline.
9. Embakasi Central
Benjamin Mwangi of the Jubilee party is the current MP of the sub-county which has five wards; Matopeni/Spring Valley, Komarock,Kayole North, Kayole Central and Kayole South,
In 2017, the sub-county had 131,991 voters.
10. Ruaraka
It is made up of five wards which include; Baba Dogo, Utalii, Mathare North, Lucky Summer and Korogocho.
ODM’s Tom Joseph Kajwang’is the area Mp of the sub-county which had 116,301 voters in the 2017 General Elections.
11. Kasarani
With Jubilee’s Mercy Gakuya as its MP, Kasarani had 146,701 voters in the 2017 General Elections.
Ruai, Njiru, Kasarani, Mwiki, Clay city are the five wards found within the sub-county.
12. Kibra
The sub-county has five wards; Laini Saba, Makina, Sarango’mbe, Lindi and Woodley. It is represented by ODM’s Imran Okoth as the area Mp.
In the 2017 General Elections, Kibra had 117,278 registered voters.
13. Langata
Jubilee’s Nixon Kiprotich Korir is the area MP. The area has five wards; Karen, Nairobi West, Mugumoini, South C and Nyayo and Highrise.
In the last elections, the sub-county had 132,835 voters.
14. Roysambu
Roysambu Constituency has five wards; Zimmerman, Githurai 44, Kahawa, Kahawa West and Roysambu.
Jubilee’s Isaac Waihenya is the area Member of Parliament. The area had 148,349 voters in the last General Elections.
15. Dagoretti North
In the 2017 General Elections, Dagoretti North recorded 147,214 voters with ODM’s Paul Simba Arati winning the parliamentary seat.
It has five wards; Kilimani, Gatina, Kawangware, Kileleshwa and Kabiro.
16. Dagoretti South
With Jubilee’s John Kiarie as its MP, Dagoretti South had 107,259 voters.
Waithaka, Riruta, Ngando, Mutuini and Uthiru are the five wards found within the sub-county.
17. Westlands
The sub-county is currently under the leadership of ODM party member
Timothy Wanyonyi Wetangula as the area MP. The area had 152,718 voters in the 2017 General Elections.
It has four wards Karura, Mountain View, Parklands and Kitusuru.
