Man charged with Sh10m fraud in fake herbicides deal

The magistrate granted the accused Sh2 million bond with a surety of the same amount

A man was on Tuesday charged with defrauding an investment company of Sh10 million by pretending he could supply them with herbicides.

Victor Otieno Obonyo however denied the charge before Kibera chief magistrate Ann Mwangi.

He was accused of committing the offense on diverse dates between August 7, 2022, and December the same year in Nairobi county.

The charge sheet stated the accused person conspired to defraud M/S Disk and Bob Investment Limited of Sh10,338,875 through fictitious deals for supplies of herbicides to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, Nairobi office.

Obonyo's lawyer pleaded with the court for lenient bond terms.

The lawyer told the court that the accused person was not a flight risk but a law-abiding citizen.

The defence team also asked to be supplied with all witness statements and documentary evidence that the prosecution will rely on during the entire case.

The magistrate granted the accused Sh2 million bond with a surety of the same amount.

The matter will be mentioned on July 26 for fixing a hearing date.

In the same court, another man was charged with cyber harassment for calling a woman a drug peddler on their estate's Whatsapp group.

Pharis Mukura denied saying “there is a lady in house number 15 peddling drugs within the estate,” on the groups chats in reference to a woman who is the complainant in the case.

He was accused of committing the offense on May 1 at Mwarubaini court in Mountain View within Westlands, Nairobi.

The charge sheet shows Mukura willingly posted the said words on the Mwarubaini Court WhatsApp group in reference to the complainant.

The magistrate released him on a bond of Sh50,000 with an alternative bail of Sh30,000 and directed that the matter be mentioned on July 4 for pre-trial.

The court also directed that the accused person be supplied with all the witness statements and documentary evidence the prosecution intends to rely on during the trail.
