•The PS said increasing scholarships and bursaries for students and ensuring qualified students pursue higher education will bridge the gap between the bottom and upper strata and create a more inclusive education system.

The Ministry of Education has introduced a new digitised and convenient funding model for last year’s KCSE candidates.

Higher Education and Research Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala said the model aims to enhance quality education by ensuring access to loans and scholarships.

Speaking during a press conference held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in Nairobi, the PS said the initiative reflects the ministry’s commitment to nurturing a knowledge-based economy and empowering the youth with the necessary skills for national development.

Inyangala said the ministry will be able to actively engage with parents, students and guardians to provide guidance and collect feedback. It will also respond to emerging issues and provide solutions.

She said a lack of identification cards should not be a barrier to students who want to apply for loans and scholarships.

“Students below 18 can apply for loans and scholarships without using their identity cards. They can use their KCSE index number and attach a copy of their birth certificate. Those above 18 years and are yet to be issued with an ID can apply using their KCSE index number and attach their waiting card as evidence,” explained the PS.

She said applying under the new funding model will only be extended for 10 days and will close on August 10.

The PS said increasing scholarships and bursaries for students and ensuring qualified students pursue higher education will bridge the gap between the bottom and upper strata and create a more inclusive education system.

“Since the model is digitised, the applicants can visit www.hef.co.ke click on portal and register to create an HEF portal account, activate their link which will be sent via their email, update their profile and attach all the required documents,” Inyangala said.

She encouraged vulnerable students in rural areas to visit Huduma centres for help.

The PS called upon university administrators and students to support the initiative.

“Together we can build a robust higher education system that meets our nation's aspirations and prepares our youth for a prosperous future,” Dr. Inyangala said.
