The boda boda and tuk tuk
associations have teamed up to form a national umbrella body that brings
together over 35 transport associations and 410 saccos.
The body, dubbed the Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Transport Cooperative
Union of Kenya, was formed to promote the social, economic, and security
interests of its members.
The union acts as the official
representative body of boda boda
and tuk tuk operators,
coordinating activities and engagements with members.
It will also facilitate the digital
registration of all operators and promote the adoption of systems to curb theft
and insecurity in the country.
“The union shall organize members
into structured saccos and associations for better financial management and
economic empowerment,” read part of a press statement by Nehemiah Kiwa, the Chairman of the Boda Boda & Tuk Tuk Transport Cooperative
Union of Kenya.
“The union will also maintain order
and discipline among operators by enforcing operational standards and codes of
conduct. It will support the Patron in implementing sectoral reforms and
advocating for riders’ rights.”
For years, the boda boda sector has been riddled with
divisions and infighting, derailing key milestones.
The formation of the new union was
spearheaded by former Nairobi Governor
Mike Sonko, who was recently chosen as the union’s patron.
His mandate includes advocating for
riders’ rights, enhancing financial empowerment, and pushing for much-needed
sector reforms.
“As a union of sober formations, we
strongly reaffirm our unwavering confidence and support for His Excellency
Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko as he assumes his role as our chosen Patron,” Kiwa
added.
“Our collective decision to have
H.E. Sonko as our Patron was reached after extensive consultations among
legitimate leaders from all 47 counties and all eight regions of Kenya. We
chose him because of his proven track record in championing the rights and
welfare of boda boda and tuk tuk operators.”
The union expressed optimism that
with Sonko at the helm, its interests will be effectively represented, adding
that the former governor has committed to driving reforms and ensuring a
brighter, safer, and more prosperous future for all riders and operators in the
country.
A six-member steering committee,
headed by Nehemiah Kiwa, will
oversee the union’s daily operations under Sonko’s leadership as Patron.
With millions of livelihoods at
stake, the success of this initiative could redefine Kenya’s transport
industry.
“The message from the union is clear: one voice, one union, one future.”
