A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) delegates have welcomed the move by the party to kick out election coordinators in Nairobi County.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the delegates termed the decision as timely.

Led by Dagoreti North chairman Moses Ogeto, the delegates said invalid members, leaving behind correct members who have steered the party for the last 17 years, had hijacked grassroot elections.

"We must thank the ODM Central Committee for firing those coordinators because there was no transparency in the whole process. They came up their own membership that was orchestrated by some party political class to shortchange others. Our boss Raila Odinga together with his team have done a good thing and going forward, we want a transparent and accountable co-ordinators to steer the process as from April 7." Ogeto said.

Dagoreti North women leader Josephine Okwero Omwenya accused the coordinators of taking bribes to fix non-ODM candidates in the delegates list.

"Those who have been in other parties cannot come here to dictate for us how ODM should be run. Ogeto has steered the party very well since Arati left,” Omwenya added.

Meanwhile ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has defended the sacking of ODM Elections Coordinators in Nairobi, Siaya and Migori counties saying the action was necessary to build confidence and transparency in the highly contested elections.

"The county elections coordinators for Nairobi, all of them, have been dismissed. Also, the chair of coordinators in Migori and some of the coordinators in Siaya county are to be replaced with immediate effect. New coordinators shall be announced to take up those slots by the NECC," he said.

The grassroot elections resume on April 7.

The exercise is a continuation of elections that was held on November 17, 2024 which saw party members elect officials at the polling unit level.

The Monday election will be conducted at the sub-branch level which is the ward.
