Construction of the Seku campus in Mwingi will cost Sh350 million, South Eastern Kenya University Vice Chancellor, Professor Geoffrey Muluvi has said.

Muluvi spoke after spearheading a consultative meeting with Mwingi professionals led by their chairman Titus Kivaa, he said the university council has plans underway to complete the facility in two years.

In 2016, the Mwingi professionals donated a 15-acre land in Kanzoka, a few kilometres from Mwingi town for the construction of the institution.

However, it stalled for several years even before the construction of the gate was completed.

Muluvi called for patience saying he will be resuming talks with Kitui Governor Julius Malombe and other leaders to lobby for funds for the construction to resume.

"Before the end of the year, the tendering process for putting up a fence will be advertised," he said.

Muluvi said he hopes the school will be built to high standards and it will not morph into another white elephant.

"The campus should meet all standard requirements so that it can be accredited by the Commission for University Education as a higher  learning institution," he said.

Muluvi said as the population of students grows, more land will be required to house the surging number of learners.

Kivaa said putting up such a facility would highly contribute to the economical growth of the area.

"Despite bringing education closer to residents, the area will positively advance in creating employment opportunities and business growth," he said.

Campbell Munyambu, the team coordinator urged leaders to lobby for the release of the construction from the National Treasury.

"We urge our leader, Stephen Kalonzo, MPs and other leaders to push for this project because it will be a game changer for our people," he said.
