The Heavy rains that continue to pound many parts of the Northeastern region are turning into a nightmare for residents and motorists.

Some feeder roads leading to Garissa town were on Sunday washed away after the heavy downpour that lasted several hours.

Galbet, one of the most affected wards with Bulla Vumbi, Bulla Dobale and Bulla ADC among the areas the rains destroyed property forcing residents to seek refuge elsewhere.

Speaking to the press after conducting an inspection tour to access the damage caused by the heavy rains, Galbet ward MCA Abubakar Khalif laid the blame on the poor workmanship.

“It is devastating to see how the rain which we have been praying for have damaged the lives and properties of the people in my ward,” he said.

“The heavy rains have exposed the corrupt shoddy deals of the road contractors and the incompetency of those who were awarded the tenders.

"Two main roads in my ward(Garissa-Rahole road and Dobale main road) have been cut off completely because they don’t have  proper drainage systems."

The county assembly majority leader said that moving forward he will be filing a petition to demand compensation for the victims.

The MCA further urged residents of Garissa town and its environs to maintain cleanliness and avoid littering.

“I want to urge urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly, especially during this rainy season where water-borne diseases are rampant,” he said.

In September last year, Garissa Governor Nathif Jama launched a weekly town cleaning drive every Sunday.

The town has been grappling with increased poor solid waste management that has morphed into a health hazard.
