The government is repairing a section of the Garissa-Modogashe road that was washed away by heavy rain on Sunday morning.
Northeastern regional commissioner John Otieno said on Tuesday that since it is a major gateway to Wajir and Mandera counties, relevant agencies will work round the clock to make sure that transport resumes as quickly as possible.
"There is an indication of extensive damage that requires heavy resources. However, we have put contingency measures to ensure that vehicles are able to move across in the next few hours as repairs continue," Otieno said.
Close to 150 cars, buses and trucks were stuck on both sides of the road at Ohio market centre as Kenya National Highway Authority engineers in the county worked on an alternative diversion to allow transport to resume.
Kenha Northeastern regional director engineer Hannington Kidagisa urged the public to be patient as they repair the road.
He said repairs will cost between Sh100 million and Sh150 million.
"We are trying to create a temporary diversion which will be completed in the next two to three hours as we continue to repair the main road," Kidagisa said.
"This road is part of A13 and is the main highway that links Garissa to Wajir and Mandera and it's the only tarmacked section."
