A Garissa University staff was Wednesday arraigned at a Garissa Court and charged with allegedly forging academic documents.

Abdihakim Dagane Hassan was arraigned at the Garissa chief magistrate court.

He was charged with seven counts among them  Forgery contrary to Section 345 as read with Section 349 of the Penal Code -four (4) counts.

Others were deceiving principals contrary to Section 41(2) as read with Section 48(1) of the Anti-Corruption And Economic Crimes Act, N0. 3 Of 2003, uttering false documents contrary to section 353 of the Penal Code and giving false information to a person employed in the public service, contrary to Section 129 (a) of the Penal Code.

Hassan was arrested by officials from EACC after it was established that he had allegedly forged a  Bachelor of Business Information Technology degree certificate from Mount Kenya University purporting it to be a genuine degree certificate awarded to him by Mount Kenya University on  9th December 2016, a fact he knew to be false.

He purported to have been awarded Second Class Honours Upper Division.

Upon completion of investigations, the Commission submitted its investigation report to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) who concurred with the recommendations of EACC to charge the suspect.

The suspect denied all seven counts before chief magistrate  H.M Nyaberi and was remanded at the Garissa G.K prison until April 24, when his case will be mentioned.

Besides criminal investigations on academic fraud, EACC will file civil proceedings in court to recover all salaries and benefits earned on the basis of fake academic qualifications.

Securing employment on the basis of fake academic certificates amounts to the fraudulent acquisition of public property.
