Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested two police officers found in possession of cocaine.

The officers, who are attached to Moyale police station, were found in possession of 800 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of Sh3.2 million.

The cocaine was recovered from the house of one of the suspects within the station’s police lines.

Marsabit County Police Commander Patrick Mwakio said the two were arrested following a tip-off.

He said a thorough search in the houses of the two officers led the police to the drugs.

Mwakio said nothing was found in the house of the second suspect, who is assisting the police with investigations.

The county police boss said investigations into the incident have been intensified.

“We are expecting to make a breakthrough and the net could be cast even wider,” he said.

A source privy to investigations said the two officers had arrested a Nigerian woman with the drugs 10 days ago.

They then opted to take a bribe instead of taking the suspect to the police station for booking and processing.

However, the suspect reportedly could not immediately afford the amount agreed and had only Sh300,000.

A deal was then cut for the officers to hold on to the cocaine to allow the suspect time to raise the balance.

When the suspect failed to return, the two officers then decided to sell the drugs to bhang peddlers at Moyale town border.

Local intelligence agents alerted the Moyale subcounty Criminal Investigations officer, who arrested the two officers and recovered the cocaine.

DCI director general Mohamed Amin said elaborate measures will be put in place to fight cross-border crime.

Amin, who visited the county on Friday said he will open DCI offices at Sololo and Dukana to make the agency's work more effective.
