Wajir County residents on Sunday braced scorching sun to witness an electrifying grand finale of the prestigious Wajir County Governor’s Super Cup at the iconic Wajir Stadium.
In a nail-biting match, FC Shabah emerged triumphant, securing a 5-4 victory in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular time against Al-Ansar FC, to lift the Wajir County Governor’s Super Cup 2023 trophy and grab the coveted prize of Sh500,000.
Despite a goalless regulation time, spectators were treated to a mesmerizing 90 minutes of football, which saw Ansar FC failed to match the energy of their fans early on.
Despite failing to lift the trophy, Ansar FC’s Said Abdi Ahmed was crowned the most valuable player of the tournament and was gifted Sh 30,000.
Al-Bakar’s goalkeeper Abdiaziz Abdullahi Idhow was crowned the golden glove and was handed Sh30,000 while FC Shabah striker Yusuf Yunis was crowned the top goal scorer and received Sh30,000.
The Al-Ansar FC, who emerged as the first runners-up, pocketed a cash prize of Sh250,000, while the second runner-up, Wagheri FC Youth, walked away with Sh200,000, and Al-Bakar bagged Sh500 000 after emerging as the 3rd runner-up
This year’s theme, "Say No to Drug Abuse, Radicalization, and Nurture Home-Grown Talent," echoed throughout the event, emphasizing the importance of social responsibility and talent development.
Additionally, three teams namely Young Muslim FC, Al Suni and Madina FC were recognized and awarded Kshs 40,000 each for their exemplary discipline.
Furthermore, ten match officials were each honoured with Sh10,000, and all forty competing teams were provided with football kits.
The Chief Guest was Ismail Maalim, Principal Secretary of Youth Affairs and Creative Economy.
Spanning four weeks, this tournament transcended mere competition; it served as a beacon of unity, talent, and community spirit.
After crowning the winners, Governor Ahmed Abdullahi said the tournament that started four weeks ago brought together 40 teams across the Wajir town municipality.
Abdullahi said the tournament serves as a platform to recognize and nurture youth’s sporting potential, encouraging local and international clubs to identify and nurture their talents.
The tournament, he observed goes beyond the allure of substantial cash prizes, and has been a platform for fostering teamwork and camaraderie across the county.
Hence, the county government is committed to investing in sporting activities to develop talent among the youth.
The County Governor, aims to promote global football opportunities for young people, preventing drug abuse and early pregnancies, and exposing them to emerging opportunities.
“We stand firm against the scourge of drug abuse that plagues our communities, tearing apart families and destroying futures. Let us pledge to support and guide our youth away from the temptations of substance abuse, ensuring they have a bright and promising future ahead,” he said.
“Equally important is our commitment to combat radicalization. In a world where extremist ideologies seek to divide us, sports are a powerful tool for unity and inclusivity,” he added.
He asked the county residents to embrace diversity, understanding that cultural differences enrich rather than divide.
“Through sports, we foster friendships that transcend boundaries, fostering peace and harmony in our society,” he held.
The governor affirmed his administration's dedication to nurturing home-grown talent.
“Our young athletes are the future champions, representing the aspirations and dreams of our community. It is our responsibility to provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to excel and succeed,” he emphasized.
