Six bodies of artisanal miners have been recovered at the Hillo gold mines in Dabel, Marsabit county.
Authorities say the six were killed in a clash between two groups of miners on Sunday and Monday.
Six more people were hospitalised at the Moyale Level 4 Hospital.
Marsabit County Commissioner Nobert Komora said investigations to establish the cause of the fight.
Komora, who is also the chairman of the County Intelligence and Security Committee said a decision will be made on when mining will resume.
Those killed are believed to be Ethiopian nationals.
Reports say the fight was triggered by the discovery of a big gold beam.
The mining area has since last year attracted thousands of precious minerals speculators and there has been occasional clashes between rival groups.
The activity has attracted miners from all over Marsabit County and other parts of the country as well as neighbouring countries.
According to reports from the Ministry of Mining and the Blue Economy, fortune chasers from as far as Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have found their way to Hillo, where a shanty city has developed.
Other countries from where artisanal miners have migrated to Dabel include Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania and Southern Sudan.
The Government has employed measures to streamline mining activities in the area which largely remain illegal with unprecedented environmental degradation and loss of revenue.
These include helping local miners to form and operate as cooperative societies and training law enforcement agencies on the Mining Act 2016.
Bodies of the deceased have been taken to Moyale Level 4 Hospital.
