Hafid Maalim, the chairperson of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in Northeastern Kenya, has urged leaders in the region to exercise restraint in their public remarks.

He noted that their words and actions have a strong influence on the people they lead.

His remarks follow a public dispute between Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and Dela/Anole MCA Yussuf Hassan. Their exchange has dominated both mainstream media and local radio stations.

Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, Yussuf—who was released by his abductors on March 9—claimed that Governor Abdullahi was behind his abduction.

He alleged that his stance against the county’s 2024 budget led to his kidnapping and torture. The MCA said the budget was passed while he was in captivity.

In a swift response, Governor Abdullahi dismissed the claims. He termed them as baseless propaganda by a political rival seeking relevance and aiming to damage his reputation.

According to the governor, some individuals are using the MCA's situation to further their political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Hafid condemned the MCA's statements, calling them divisive and irresponsible. He said such utterances only serve to stir division within the community.

He also raised concern over the rise of speculation and accusations in public forums and WhatsApp groups. He said such discussions harm the unity of the region.

“While I personally sympathize with the MCA and condemn his disappearance and the trauma he experienced, I must call him out on his recent remarks,” Hafid said.

He accused the MCA of making unsubstantiated claims driven by political motives. He urged the public to allow investigative agencies to handle the matter.

“The accusations against Governor Ahmed are criminal in nature. Let us give the relevant authorities time and space to investigate,” Hafid added.

He warned that the ongoing political tension could destabilize the region. He emphasized that leaders must choose their words carefully to avoid inciting chaos.

“This deviation has plagued us for decades. We keep fighting tribal and clan wars that benefit no one, especially ordinary citizens. Leaders must realise that their words influence their followers,” he said.

Hafid appealed to residents of Wajir West and Eldas not to let the dispute divide them. He said there is far more that unites the communities than divides them.

Meanwhile, Governor Abdullahi vowed to pursue legal action. He said Yussuf must either prove his allegations or face the consequences in court.

On Sunday, Wajir East MP Adan Daud, speaking on behalf of leaders from Wajir and Mandera, condemned Yussuf’s claims. He described the allegations as barbaric and reckless.
