Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo

A section of Nyamira MPs have blasted Governor Amos Nyaribo for allegedly sacking county employees and employing relatives.

The leaders demanded that Governor Nyaribo reinstates the employees until they exhaust their contracts.

They spoke at Ogango village in West Mugirango constituency on Friday during the burial of Mama Rael Omanwa, mother to former Roads Transport and Public Works CEC John Omanwa.

They were referring to the recent dismissal of workers who were referred to as ghost workers in bid to reduce the counties wage bill, which stands at 53 per cent instead of 35 per cent.

Former Kitutu Masaba MP Walter Nyambati said Governor Nyaribo should concentrate on working and developing the county instead of sacking employees, who were employed by his predecessor, John Nyagarama.

Nyangarama died in office on December 20 last year, upon which Nyaribo became governor.

“The county government under the leadership of Governor Nyaribo has not convinced the residents of Nyamira county that it can deliver services to them. Instead, it has started sacking workers who were employed long time ago, which is not right,” Nyambati said.

Borabu MP Ben Momanyi said it is shameful for Nyaribo to sack the people who were legally employed by Nyangarama only to bring on board his allies, friends, relatives and extended family.

“We cannot have situation where a governor who should run a county with wisdom goes on sacking people anyhow, bringing his relatives, family members and friends to employ. This is absolutely wrong and that is why his position needs to be taken by another person come 2022 elections,” Momanyi said.

But Governor Nyaribo dismissed the allegations as mere politicking.

"I will only concentrate on developing the county and working for the people of the county. This is the time that leaders need to work together towards a common goal that is development,"Nyaribo said.

City-based lawyer and West Mugirango hopeful Stephen Mogaka said Nyaribo should not just sack people but follow the procedure of dismissing workers.

"I do not understand why county employees whose contracts expire after five years should be sent away. Even for a housegirl, when you send her out of your house, the law requires you pay her all her money and give her enough transport to help her reach her destination, not just waking up and telling he to leave your house,” Mogaka said.
