A Sub Location Assistant Chief was on Thursday arraigned at the Siaya Law Courts over the alleged defilement of a minor.

Samuel Hezron Nyawalo, an Assistant Chief of Ramula Sub Location in East Gem, Siaya County, was accused of committing the offence contrary to Section 8(1) and (2) of the sexual offences Act No. 3 of 2006.

Appearing before Judge Margaret Wambani, the court heard that Nyawalo defiled a 14-year-old girl on the 4th and 5th of June 2022 in Ramula village.

“On the diverse date of 4th and 5th day of June 2022… you intentionally caused your penis to penetrate the vagina of a child aged 14 years,” the particulars of the offence read.

Nyawalo pleaded not guilty and was released on a Sh200,000 bond.

Kisumu-based rights defender Paul Omondi, who had pressed for the arrest of Nyawalo, said that incidences of defilement are increasing in Gem.

Omondi urged locals to whistleblow and survivors to report to the police or a responsible member of the community whenever such happens.

That way, he said, perpetrators can be charged and justice served.
