Nyamira County Assembly

Nyamira county assembly will have majority of new faces after the just concluded general election after a number of MCAs were shown the door by the electorate.

Out of the 20 MCAs elected in 2017, only six were lucky to retain their seats.

The six who retained their seats are; Alfayo Ngeresa (Mekenene) Duke Masira (Township) Charles Keganda (Bosamaro) Dennis Kebaso (Nyansiongo) Thadeus Nyabaro (Ekerenyo) and George Abuga of Bogichora.

Residents who were interviewed on Friday said majority of the MCAs who were kicked out did not perform their duty of representation, oversight and legislation according to expectations.

“We entrusted these leaders with the said office, but they were not up to task. We need to give the opportunity to leaders who can perform the duties, this is one of the reasons why some of these underperformers had to be kicked out to pave way for serious leaders,” said a resident.

In the last assembly, Nyamira had 20 elected MCAs and 16 nominated ones totalling to 36 members.

Once the MCAs are sworn in, they will then elect their majority leader from among the majority membership in the assembly.

The United Progressive Alliance Party (UPA) under the stewardship of Governor Amos Nyaribo is likely to carry the day in the county assembly as six of the elected MCAs are from the party.

According to Rigoma MCA- elect Nyambega Gisesa, the UPA party MCAs will be deliberating on the way forward for the position of the majority seat in the county assembly so as to achieve what the last regime of majority never did.

“The UPA party MCAs- elect have organised meetings meant to deliberate on the way forward for our party and our county, now that we have the majority of members. We want to portray a different picture in representation unlike in the last regime,” Gisesa said on phone on Monday.
