Two primary schools in Tongareni constituency, Bungoma county will benefit from a Sh35 million sponsorship by Safaricom Foundation for infrastructural development.
They are Naititi Primary School which will receive Sh25million, and Naitiri RC Primary School which will receive another grant of Sh10 million from the foundation for the institutions’ facelift.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula unveiled the sponsorship on behalf of the foundation at Naitiri Primary School on Sunday.
The foundation's Director, Sustainable Business and Social Impact Karen Basiye said rehabilitation of the schools will start immediately.
"We have decided to give back to the community by giving a new face to the two schools which are in a bad state," she said.
Wetang'ula said the sponsorship was timely given the sorry state of the two schools.
"Schools are now struggling to set up more classes to be able to accommodate pupils under the new CBC education system. It is good the foundation is part of this development," he added.
On behalf of the community, Wetang'ula thanked Safaricom for the support saying it will go a long way in ensuring pupils have a conducive learning environment, hence improving the education standards.
"It is good that Safaricom is giving back to the society. Their choice of schools in Tongareni has come at the right time as it supplements efforts by the government to improve the infrastructure, to be able to accommodate pupils under the new education system," he said.
He challenged parents to embrace the profound importance of providing their children with not just an education, but an education of the utmost quality and standard.
He said it is through the cultivation of knowledge and intellectual growth that future generations are empowered to transcend boundaries and unlock their fullest potential.
Bisiye said Safaricom Foundation is putting more emphasis on supporting health, education and economic empowerment programmes across the country.
"In Bungoma we have 16 students who are part of the Mpesa Foundation Academy. We would like for this number to increase in order to help children from this region to have the possibility of a better future through education," she said.
Area MP John Chikati said the foundation's move will go a long way in supplementing his efforts through NG-CDF to improve the status of schools in the constituency.
