Azimio supporters on Friday took to the streets in major towns in Homa Bay County to protest against the high cost of living.

The supporters thronged the streets as they lit bonfires and barricaded roads to show their dissatisfaction with the way Kenya Kwanza administration is handling the cost of living.

Their turn-up also reaffirmed solidarity with the coalition leader Raila Odinga.

MPs Ong'ondo Were(Kasupil) and Lillian Gogo (Rangwe) led the Azimio supporters in the protest in their respective constituencies.

MP Were and the constituency ODM chairman Evans Ndege together with the supporters staged the protest in Oyugis town.

They also marched along the busy Oyugis –Kisii road. Were said the high cost of living has pushed them to go to the streets.

He claimed that the Kenya Kwanza government has refused to listen to the majority of Kenyans who are unable to bear the current economic situation.

"If a demonstration is the only language this regime can understand and reduce the cost of living so be it. We'll push it to the end," Were said.

According to the legislator, some of his constituents can only afford one meal a day.

The Kasupil MP called on the police in the constituency to provide security to the protesters on the grounds that they were fighting for their rights.

He argued that the hard economic situation in the country is affecting all Kenyans including the security officers.

"Life has become unbearable for most people in Kasipul. The amount of money that could take care of a family for days can now be used to purchase one meal," he said.

In Rangwe, Lilian Gogo argued that they were forced to go to the streets because President William Ruto-led administration has failed to address the challenges bedevilling Kenyans.

She accused the Kenya Kwanza government of what she termed as giving Kenyans false promises.

"Kenya Kwanza government has nothing beneficial to Kenyans. They can't fight corruption and that's why I didn't support the Finance Bill 2023," Gogo said.

MCAs from the Rangwe constituency such as Ojala Nyang'i (Kochia), Patrick Ware (Gem West), Paul Odok ( East Gem) and Hamilton Odhiambo (Kagan) were present.

Businesses remained closed for the better part of the day over fears that protesters may engage in hooliganism.

Police officers remained at bay as protesters thronged the streets in Homa Bay town.
