A man drowned on Wednesday evening during a fishing expedition in Lake Victoria near Litare beach in Suba North constituency.

Charles Opondo is reported to have slipped and drowned as he was trying to pull fishing net from the boat they were using for fishing.

He was in the company of two colleagues.

Kamasengre West assistant chief Meshack Wachianga said Odongo’s colleagues reported to his office that he was trying to stand inside the moving boat to pull the net when he slipped and drowned.

He lost balance and fell into the water before his body disappeared, the administrator said.

“The fishermen reported that Odongo stood on the boat to pull their net as they were moving. He eventually fell into the lake before his body sank and disappeared,” Wachianga said.

The administrator on Thursday urged fishermen to put on life jackets during fishing expedition to prevent deaths.

“Suppose he wore a life jacket, his body would have floated for some time. This would have enabled his colleagues to rescue him,” Wachianga said.

He urged fishermen to embrace communication on a boat.

Wachianga asked coxswain to remain extra-careful and be slowing down during strong waves.

Litare Beach Management Unit chairman Isaiah Pero appealed to residents and well-wishers to intervene with humanitarian aid and help them look for Odongo’s body.

He said they had started searching for the body.

“We’re working with local divers but we still appeal for well-wishers to help us look for the body of our colleague,” Pero said.

Odongo is a resident of South Kanyamkago sublocation, Uriri subcounty, in Migori county. He used to reside at Litare beach where he has been fishing.
