More than 8,000 participants are expected to attend the affordable housing festival in Kisumu county.

The festival aims to promote sustained commitment and support for the implementation of affordable housing projects.

The festival has been organised by Grassroots Trust in partnership with Kisumu county government and Housing Rights Coalition.

It is expected to take place between November 29 and December 2.

Grassroots Trust Coordinator Lawrence Apiyo said the festival will focus on the low income earners.

“The conference will contribute to the progressive realisation of the right to access secure land and affordable housing for sustainable development,” he said.

It is themed Proclaiming Affordable Housing is Freedom towards an equitable and inclusive Affordable housing.

He said the event will bring together participants with diverse housing needs, concerns, experiences, and interests.

This includes affordable finance and innovation on topical housing issues.

Apiyo said 13 county governments, which are currently in the process of rolling out Affordable housing programmes will make presentations.

He said more than 100 grassroots housing groups will sensitise participants on accessing banking information in order to open housing savings accounts.

Apiyo said property developers, manufacturers and suppliers will also make presentations.

“It will also serve as a platform for understanding where we stand in relation to Sustainable Development Goal 11, New Urban Agenda on Housing,” he said.

The event will explore variables impeding construction of adequate and affordable housing, such as land, housing finance, infrastructure, policy and legal frameworks, innovative building technologies, institutional arrangements, and target beneficiary involvement.

The festival will see a declaration of a model affordable housing site for a housing project where all actors will partner to develop and showcase for future replication.

Apiyo said the festival will increase sensitisation on the housing agenda through interactive symposium with key stakeholders.

“It will ensure adoption of a harmonised strategy for implementing affordable housing especially for the poor and the vulnerable,” he said.

A symposium will also be held at the University of Nairobi, Kisumu Campus and exhibition at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga sports ground.

Participants will be expected to register for the event one month in advance with 70 per cent of the booth costs.

Exhibitors will pay Sh18,000 for 10x10 booths, Sh 45,000 for 10x20 booths while 20x20 will cost Sh 60,000 for the entire three days.
