Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Saturday claimed that he is the one in possession of the Ofafa Memorial Hall in Kisumu's title deed.

Raila said this amid tussles over the ownership of the land that a faction of the Luo Council of Elders put claims to.

He said the memorial hall remains the headquarters of the people of the Luo nation.

While giving a brief history of how the memorial hall came to be, Raila named different regions where his late father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga got contributions from members of the Luo Union back then to aid in putting up the hall.

"I remember the year 1958 how I accompanied my father traversing across regions where members of the Luo Unions were and saw how they collected money among themselves to aid in this," he said.

"We know how the Ofafa memorial hall came to be and I remember together with my brother Senator Oburu Odinga, we used to water this area when constructions were going on".

Speaking during the coronation of the 9th Luo Council of Elders chairman Odungi Randa, Raila said that following the death of the defunct Luo Union Official, he was handed over the title deed.

He noted that when Siaya Governor James Orengo was the then Minister for land, he handled the matter, and the title deed was changed from the Luo Union and put under the Luo Council of Elders.

He stated that it was the reason why Odungi had to be coronated at the Ofafa Memorial Hall, the shrine of the Luo people on Friday, December 22.

"The title is currently in my possession and you should not be afraid but stand still because I assure you that the plans we have for the modernization of this hall into a cultural center remain," Raila assured.

He said they had already brought an architect on the ground and the cultural center will include a museum showcasing the Luo cultures and traditions, and learning halls for both children and young people in different areas to ensure the Luo culture is preserved.

The ODM Leader also said that the region will have cultural centers within the counties.

"I talked to governors and they agreed on the same."

In Homabay, Raila disclosed that already they have land in the Kagan area for the construction of the cultural sites adding that the remaining counties are also in the process of the same.

"We want to ensure that our people know about the Luo cultures and traditions including our history," he said.
