Police on Friday exhumed the body of a woman who was last seen on January 1, 2024, from a 9-feet-deep gold mining pit in Nango in Bondo, Siaya County.

The deceased, Maureen Achieng, whose body is now lying at the Bondo Sub County Hospital mortuary, is suspected to have been murdered by his boyfriend Edwin Ochieng.

When the duo were last seen, they were on a drinking spree at a bar in Nango Center before heading into the house of the suspected killer.

"It was reported by Carey Omondi that he had suspected that Ochieng was behind the disappearance of Achieng who was his employee at a Bar and Restaurant in Nango centre," said Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo.

Kimaiyo told The Star that police officers arrested the suspect who then confessed to having killed his girlfriend on January 3, 2024, in his house over suspicion of cheating.

It is the suspected murderer who led officers to the gold mining pit where he said he had dumped Achieng's body and covered it with iron sheets and soil, police said.

A wheelbarrow that is believed to have been used by the suspect to ferry the lifeless body of the deceased from the house to the pit was recovered from the crime scene.

The police are using the wheelbarrow as an exhibit.

A blood-soaked yellowish t-shirt and a whitish trouser were also collected from the house of the accused and are being subjected to forensic analysis, said Kimaiyo.

The Bondo Law Courts remanded the suspect for 14 days at the Bondo Police Station to give room for further investigations, mental assessment and postmortem.

Still in Bondo Sub County, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation officers are hot on the heels of a Koracho beach-based fisherman Ben Ogweno Oduor who is suspected to have killed his wife in Uhanya village, also on accusation of infidelity.

The Siaya County Police boss confirmed the incident, saying that the body of the 21-year-old woman had multiple cuts on the head, face, right thigh and abdomen.

"Police officers visited the scene and found the body of Stella Adongo, a female adult aged 21 years lying in a pool of blood in their rented house," said Kimaiyo.

It was reported that Oduor had wrangles with the deceased whom he accused of having a love affair with another man who hails from Usenge, he added.
