Police in Migiri have launched a manhunt for a suspect who escaped after being intercepted with bhang at the Nyakiti border crossing in Kuria West.

It was reported that a rider crossed over from Tanzania with four sacks of bhang weighing 160 kilograms when he was intercepted by police who acted on a tip-off from members of the public.

Migori county police commander Francis Nguli said the suspect left the drugs and the motorbike and fled.

He said the drugs had a street value of Sh4.8million.

“This is part of the continued crackdown on illicit drugs and brew in the county,” Nguli said.

He was speaking to the press in Migori town on Friday at police headquarters where he also said they impounded 10 sacks amounting to 120 kilograms of jaggery with a street value of Sh148,000 used to make illicit brew.

Nguli said that within three days across the county over 2,000 liters of chang’aa and kangara have been impounded and suspects arraigned in court.

Two days ago, police arrested another suspect with 531 kilograms of bhang worth Sh15 million.

The bhang was in nine sacks while another eight were impounded with drugs yet to be identified.

The owner of the homestead and another suspect are said to have evaded police dragnet.

Isebania police station OCS Meshack Mulwa said they have heightened crackdown on bhang using police sniffer dogs used at the border patrol base during raids.
