Brian Kwoba, a second-year student at Great Lakes University in Kisumu County has missed a full academic year because of unpaid fees.
He is now pleading with well-wishers for assistance to accomplish his aspirations.
Kwoba, who was placed at the private university by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service to pursue a degree in nursing, is not eligible for the Higher Education Loans Board.
A resident of Bumula in Bungoma County, Kwoba said all his efforts to seek help from leaders in his native South Bukusu ward had been futile.
He claims the institution's administration stopped him from attending lessons because of the enormous debt.
“It is difficult for my family to pay the university Sh108,000 before being permitted to attend classes. Since last August, I have never gone back to school," he said.
He said the president's order prohibiting MPs and other public servants from engaging in fundraising is a huge setback for him because his family has attempted to organise a Harambee only to encounter difficulties.
“Even before the president issued a directive barring MPs and other government officers from actively taking part in fundraising, my family had tried engaging local leaders to come and help me, but none showed up,” Kwoba added.
His father, Andrew Nyerere, told the Star that he has unsuccessfully approached local leaders for the much-needed support.
