Homa Bay ODM leadership has criticised a section of Azimio leaders over their alleged scheme to topple Raila Odinga from the coalition.

They argue that there are attempts by some Azimio politicians to foment a ‘coup’ .

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were accused Azimio principals, led by Kalonzo Musyoka, of planning to overthrow Raila.

The governor claimed that the press conference called on Thursday by the Wiper leader and other principals in the absence of the ODM chief implied a coup attempt.

ODM and Narc-Kenya parties were not present.

The conference comes amid reports that Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua is preparing to quit the coalition.

Jubilee secretary general Jeremiah Kioni said they had resolved that Kalonzo will lead the coalition.

They said that this will allow Raila to proceed with his African Union Commission chairmanship campaigns.

However, Governor Wanga - who is the Homa Bay ODM chairperson - criticised the resolution, saying it is tantamount to overthrowing Raila.

She asked Kalonzo and his team to stop taking advantage of the former premier’s AUC bid to overthrow him.

Wanga said the Azimio decision to appoint Kalonzo as their leader was like inheriting the wife of a man when he is still alive.

She was speaking at Agoro Sare Primary School on Thursday when they presided over distribution of three school buses bought by Kasipul the National Government Constituencies Development Fund.

“We’ll oppose any unlawful move to replace Raila as Azimio leader,” she said, adding that ODM was still part of Azimio.

The county boss warned against creating unnecessary tension in the Azimio coalition.

MP Were said they are supporting Raila in leading the national dialogue to ensure peace prevails in the country.

He added that anybody who opposes the conversation between Raila and President William Ruto does not mean well Kenyans.

“We are supporting Raila in starting the new political discourse which will promote peace and national unity,” Were said.

He said ODM members who have been nominated as Cabinet Secretaries should not be victimised.

ODM leaders present included Evans Ndege (Kasipul), Jerry Odeny (Ndhiwa), Narkiso Tuko (Suba North), Lazarus Obila (Homa Bay Town), George Maigo (Karachuonyo), Caroline Owidhi (Rangwe), Collins Oure (Suba South) and youth leader Fred Okeyo.
