The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) in Kisumu took to the streets, vowing not to return to work until their demands were met.

This is despite the court suspending their strike.

The teachers marched along the city's major streets, holding placards and dancing to various tunes, as they voiced their grievances against the Teachers Services Commission (TSC) and the government.

Matching in unison while chanting slogans and displaying their placards, the teachers remained adamant.

"We are not going back until our demands are met; we will continue with the protests," said Zablon Awanga Kisumu branch executive secretary.

He said the strike is protected, and they won't be cheated by the courts to go back to class.

"The only body that can tell us to go back to class is the national governing counsel through our Secretary General Akello Misori".

He added that they can't go back without a return to work formula.

The teachers also noted that from Thursdays they will walk to schools and eject out teachers who are still teaching while they are on the streets.

"Parents should go and take their children from schools; we will not be responsible for what happens to them ".

The teacher's strike entered day three.

The teachers are calling for the confirmation of 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns.

They argued that these interns have been instrumental in the implementation of the CBC and deserve to be fully absorbed into the system.

Another major demand is the promotion of 130,000 teachers, who they say have stagnated in the same job group for more than 10 years.

The teachers are also calling for the review of the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG), which they claim have been unfairly applied and have led to disparities in promotion and pay.

In addition to the demands, the teachers are also seeking the streamlining of the teacher's medical cover.

Another key issue raised is the timely remittance of third-party deductions such as loans and insurance premiums.
