The police have confirmed that 9 passengers died on the spot in the Tuesday afternoon accident involving a trailer and a PSV matatu in Kericho county.

Police stated that the deceased include four female and five male passengers.

The officers further said both vehicles were extensively damaged, and the bodies were removed to St Vincent Mission Hospital mortuary in Muhoroni, awaiting identification and a postmortem.

The vehicles were towed to Kipsitet police station to await inspection.

Earlier, the police said several people were feared dead in the accident.

Police also confirmed that one man died on the spot in the accident that occurred at around 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

According to the police report, the accident occurred when the driver of the trailer from Kipsitet General lost control at Kisumu Ndogo.

The trailer driver then left his lane and hit a Toyota matatu, where one man died on the spot.

"As a result of the impact, several passengers are feared dead, more information to follow as soon as we remove the matatu to confirm whether we have bodies trapped," police said in the preliminary report.
