Vendors in Homa Bay are concerned about a persistent shortage of omena(silver cyprinid) due to its rising price, which has resulted in them getting minimal profits.

Due to the undersupply, vendors are said to purchase a 10-kilogramme omena bucket at a double market price, which was Sh1,000 before the shortage.

Margaret Anyango, who vends omena within the Homa Bay  fish market, decried the increase in omena prices as she is unable to make substantial profit from the sales.

"We cannot make any profit from selling omena, and at the end of the day, we have very little earnings to take home," she said.

Vendors are compelled to sell omena at a higher price to buyers who they claim are sometimes hesitant to purchase the commodity.

Mary Ayako, a vendor,  blamed Ugandan security officers whom she alleged to have prohibited fishermen from fishing on the other side of the lake.

She implored the government to step in and help salvage the situation for  business to return to normalcy.
