Residents of Nyandiwa village, Homa Bay county were left in shock on Monday morning after arsonists torched a posho mill.

The owner of the posho mill, Dickens Oswago said the gangsters gained entry into the business premises by cutting through the iron sheet wall.

The owner reportedly suffered losses amounting to more than Sh200,000 following the attack.

The gangsters set ablaze the posho mill engine, which contained fuel, hence the fast and extensive destruction.

“It was at about 2 am when I heard my mother screaming that the posho mill was on fire. I woke up hurriedly and rushed to the scene,” Oswago said.

He said they tried to salvage it, but the mill was already damaged.

“It is a very sad situation because this is the business I depend on to feed my family and educate my children,” he added.

He appealed to law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident and take punitive measures against the culprits.

“I have recorded a statement with the police. The gangsters have violated my rights," Oswago said.

Kadwet sublocation assistant chief Zachary Were said he liaised with police who are undertaking investigations on the incident.

Were said they had found a mobile phone and pliers used by the gangsters to cut through the wall of the building.

“I have referred them to Kobodo police post to record a statement. The mobile phone found at the scene will help police trace the suspects,” Were said.

He said the motive of the attack was still unknown and urged residents to avoid criminal activities and destruction of people’s property.

“I urge residents to collaborate with us in helping to apprehend the suspects,” Were said.
