Bodaboda Association of Kenya has launched an initiative to combat the rising theft of motorbikes in the Nyanza region.

BAK will lead the efforts by working with the partners, including the National Police Service to disrupt organised syndicates responsible for stealing motorbikes in Kenya and smuggling them across the border into Uganda and Tanzania.

BAK president Kevin Mubadi expressed concern over the escalating number of thefts targeting bodaboda riders, noting a sharp rise in instances where criminals pose as customers to steal bikes.

He emphasised the need for heightened security measures and community awareness programs to combat this issue.

“These motorbikes are our means of livelihood. Many of us have worked hard to buy them, and some have acquired them on loans", he said.

"Therefore we must take every legal measure to protect our assets from these syndicates," he added.

The partnership with the police and Watu will enable a swift response and safeguard property and lives.

The Deputy County Commissioner Kisumu Central Bosek Langat said they are committed to strengthening the county's efforts to combat and curb boda-boda theft and promised a swift response and action from the police.

He cautioned boda-boda riders for collaborating with criminals and endangering other road users.

He said they will double police patrols in high-risk areas.

"Security is critical. We want bodaboda operators to help us eliminate those who use motorbikes to cause disturbance within the county", said

Watu Regional Manager Kisumu Len Ogolla said they will introduce advanced tracking systems and security devices for motorbikes to prevent future thefts.

Ogolla urged vigilance regarding who operates and can be entrusted with hired motorcycles.

There are claims that some criminals disguise themselves as regular riders.

"You must know the characters of anyone you give your motorbike to, after a hard day's work, ensure it's safe and secure", Ogolla added.

The BAK initiative will include community policing in collaboration with stage chairpersons and increased police patrols in theft-prone areas to deter criminal activities.

A rapid response team will also be established to handle thefts promptly.

Additionally, the County Bodaboda Association office will conduct regular safety sensitization seminars for the riders and promote community awareness campaigns to encourage residents and riders to support and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
