A sombre mood engulfed Rodi Kopany trading centre in Homa Bay county after a two-year-old boy was burnt beyond recognition in a house fire incident.

Kanyango Location Chief Samuel Nyagwara said the minor identified as Calvince Ochieng was asleep inside the house when it caught fire.

He said the mother had gone to a nearby shop leaving him asleep but had lit a candle in the house to keep mosquitoes away.

Nyagwara said the wind might have blown the candle flames to the curtains before igniting the whole house.

He said the neighbours tried to put out the fire but were overwhelmed by the flames.

The administrator said the woman arrived back home only to find the entire house already gutted down.

When the fire subsided, the woman went in to check on her baby but found him burnt beyond recognition.

Nyagwara said Police from Rodi Kopany station took the body to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital mortuary.

He said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
