Kenyans have been assured that their contributions made to the National Health Fund (NHIF) will remain secure as the system transitions to the new Social Health Authority (SHA).
Transition from NHIF to SHA took effect on Tuesday, October 1, and on October 2, SHA said all NHIF accounts were successfully migrated to the Social Health Authority.
Principal Secretary for Public Health, Marty Muthoni, confirmed that all contributions are safe and will be seamlessly carried forward to the SHA.
Muthoni urged the public to continue registering on the new scheme which takes effect immediately.
"Rest assured, no money will be lost. All funds will be transferred to SHA "
She acknowledged that some Kenyans, who had paid NHIF in advance, were concerned about potential losses during the transition period.
However, the Ps emphasized that every shilling will be accounted for, with all NHIF balances carried over to SHA.
The PS further clarified that no cards would be issued under SHA.
She said one simply presents their national ID cards to any facility to access services.
The PS also expressed optimism over the new scheme, which she believes will transform healthcare access for all Kenyans.
"At Level 2 and 3 facilities, services will be free. At secondary levels, a minimal feel of Sh 300 will apply".
She further stated that SHA will achieve 100 percent Health coverage for Kenyans, a significant improvement over the 20 per cent coverage provided by the now defunct NHIF.
She was speaking in Kisumu on Tuesday after overseeing the training of community health promoters (CHPs) at Kuoyo Dispensary in Kisumu East.
Muthoni highlighted the crucial role CHPs will play in fast tracking the registration of Kenyans into the new systems.
She noted that the CHPs, working alongside local administrators, chiefs and their assistants will ensure as many people as possible are registered.
"As CHP moves from one household to another, helping with registration. Their role is vital in ensuring no Kenyans miss out on affordable healthcare ".
Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili noted that SHA will significantly improve access to quality healthcare across all the devolved units through coordinated efforts as envisioned under the Universal Health Coverage.
The Ps had earlier paid a courtesy call to the DG, who was accompanied by various officials including county commissioner Benson Leparmoijo, Heath CEC Gregory Ganda among others.
