Migori county government has rolled out the second edition of Dr Ochilo Ayacko’s bursaries and scholarships amounting to Sh120 Million for needy students.
Speaking at her office, Migori County chief officer in charge of Education Rosline Otieno said the 2025 bursary application was open and urged needy students to apply.
Otieno said the bursaries would benefit more than 16,346 students in secondary and tertiary levels, with the minimum amount curbed at Sh5000 and Sh10 000 for secondary school and tertiary students respectively.
She said the application forms were available on Migori County’s website, ward administrative offices, and Members of the County Assembly (MCA) offices.
The official said that the bursaries targeted total orphans, partial orphans and other needy students in the community in order to help them address school fee challenges.
She encouraged parents and the beneficiaries to fill and return the forms to ward administrators' offices and fill out attendance forms for authenticity purposes.
Additionally, the official cautioned members of the public to beware of people demanding money before they are given application forms while others claimed to know certain people that would assist them to get the scholarship.
Last week, Kajiado County Governor Joseph Ole Lenku issued bursaries and scholarships worth Sh80 million to their beneficiaries.
Out of the Sh80M, Sh20 million was earmarked as scholarships for needy and orphaned learners in secondary, university and technical institutions.
Speaking during the release, the Governor said his administration will continue increasing the amount allocated to bursaries and scholarships as the revenue collected by the county increases.
He said they are aware many parents are unable to pay the school fees for their children as climate change has greatly affected the livestock sector which is the main source of livelihood for many parents in the county thus they need the support of their county government.
“Let us all focus on education as it will help alleviate poverty in our communities. Ensure your children go to school. Always keep track of their performance as good performance of the students requires the efforts of the teachers, parents and the students combined,” the Governor said.
The County Executive Committee Member(CECM) for Education, Vocational Training, Youth and Sports Janet Sereu said that her department targets to raise the level of education in the county to guarantee the future of all learners.
She said the Sh20 million scholarships have already been released to the beneficiaries while the bursaries will be disbursed next week.
