Homa Bay county Supkem secretary Nuhu Omollo Masoud, wants the government to take action and rein in on the culture of political violence that is slowly taking root in the Rachuonyo region.

Omollo, who condemned the fracas that took place in West Kamagak during a funeral, said if the trend is allowed to continue, it will lead to loss of lives.

He said although people go to mourn with bereaved families, some politicians always turn up accompanied by a band of hooligans and proceed to showcase their might leading to chaotic scenes that breach the peace.

The Supkem leader warned that innocent lives have been lost in the past and the last incident is an indicator of what is likely to happen if serious action is not taken against perpetrators of violence.

A fracas erupted at a funeral in West Kamagak ward on Monday, where one person was hospitalised after he was injured in the melee.

Two groups reportedly clashed during the funeral.

Rachuonyo South subcounty police commander Phillip Saera confirmed the chaos which left several people with various degrees of injuries.

Saera also said several vehicles were damaged.

The police commander said investigations into the violence had already started.

He vowed police would take firm action against anybody who would be found culpable of igniting the violence.

The Homa Bay county Supkem secretary Omollo lauded the government for recognising the important role the chiefs are playing and said the plan to provide them with police officers can go a long way to help during such incidences.

He called on the subcounty security committees, religious leaders, community policing and the peace committees to work hand in hand to sensitise communities against political hooliganism and its potential negative consequences.

Omollo said the Rachuonyo region is a hotspot for political clashes especially during the election period saying necessary resources should be mobilised to ensure peace prevails.
