The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) is on track to complete the construction of the 19.34-kilometre Rusinga Ring Road by July this year.

Launched in August last year, the project is anticipated to enhance transportation to the island's beaches and fishing areas.

The project has a budget of approximately Sh1.23 billion and is currently at 73 percent complete.

Speaking after the inspection of the project, Kura Director General Eng. Siras Kinoti said the development of the Rusinga Island Ring Road will improve quality of life for the local community by enabling access to key areas, such as the beaches, and bolstering fishing activities.

“With improved access to local amenities such as beaches, the project will elevate the quality of life for residents and support local fishing enterprises,” he said.

He added that the road is likely to attract investors interested in establishing hotels and tourist attractions, thus fostering economic growth.

“This infrastructure project is expected to attract potential investors interested in establishing hotels and other tourist attractions,” he said and underscored the importance of effective resource management to ensure the success of these projects.

The engineer noted that Kura is also focused on maintaining existing roads in Homa Bay Town and has further plans to commence the construction of the Mfangano Island Ring Road.

He said Kura will embark on the Mfangano Ring Road project after the Rusinga project is complete.

Similarly, the County Government of Homa Bay is implementing the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Scheme (KISIP) on Rusinga Island which is expected to complement Kura's initiatives in enhancing local infrastructure.
