Interior PS Raymond Omollo joined Huawei Technologies in celebrating the graduation of 290 trainees from the Huawei DigiTruck digital skills training programme.
The event saw a section of other leaders led by the National Youth Council Chief Executive Officer Gloria Wawira, among other local leaders and community members at Oriwo Boys High School in Homa Bay, attend on Monday, March 17, 2025.
The six-week training programme saw 290 trainees graduate, consisting of 143 women and 147 men.
The participants gained essential skills to access online job opportunities, grow businesses and navigate the digital space confidently and safely.
By bringing digital education to underserved communities, the DigiTruck aims to bridge the digital divide and empower individuals to harness technology.
Since its 2019 launch, the DigiTruck has trained more than 6,030 youth across 36 counties, including Trans Nzoia, Kiambu, Nairobi, Uasin Gishu, Marsabit, and now Homa Bay.
In 2024 alone, the programme trained 1,648 individuals, 906 of whom were women, demonstrating its commitment to gender inclusivity and digital equity.
It aligns with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, focusing on the digital superhighway and creative economy.
Skills that can be accessed through the Huawei program include computer literacy, digital marketing, entrepreneurship and online safety, equipping individuals to thrive in the digital economy.
“Digital skills are no longer optional—they are mandatory,” Omollo said.
“Whether starting an online business, working remotely, or leveraging technology, digital literacy unlocks opportunities.”
A strong emphasis during the programme was placed on online safety, teaching participants to protect personal data, identify potential scams, and navigate the internet responsibly.
“In addition to our University Training programme with over 60 universities and TVETs, we also run the DigiTruck to reach youth outside formal education and in rural areas,” Government Affairs and Policy Director at Huawei, Adam Lane stated.
“I am proud that we have ensured an equal gender split amongst trainees, as digital skills are truly necessary for everyone in today’s economy.”
On her part, the CEO of the National Youth Council, Gloria
Wawira, congratulated the trainees and urged more youth to take advantage of
initiatives such as Ajira Digital to empower themselves.
The graduation marks a new chapter for the trainees, with certificates recognizing their skills and empowering them to explore digital entrepreneurship.
