The Livestock ministry has moved to upgrade animal rearing in the pastoral community in Narok. Narok North livestock production officer Christopher Kunder said a project dubbed Sustainable Land Management will cover Suswa,

Ewaso

Ng'iro

and

Enelerai.

“The project is aimed at developing pastoral areas by targeting development groups such as Farmers Field Schools where we will give out breeding sires, pasture seeds and modern beehives,” he said.

The project recently got a boost when it received funding by UNDP and implemented by the livestock productions Elduoranara FFS group in Ewaso Ng'iro.

They received 10 sires including five Gala he-goats and five Doper rams and eight one-metre long beehives. Speaking in Ewaso Ng'iro at the weekend, Kunder said the main objective of the project is

improving livelihood and preserving the environment.

He added that the project supplies more than 100 tree seedlings and 2,000 kilogrammes of pasture seed to the targeted communities. Narok county commissioner Kassim Farah said the community, which has for years depended on pastoralism, should take up livestock keeping as business.

He added that the community should embrace modern methods of agri-business to improve their economy. Elizabeth Koila, the secretary to Elduoranara FFS, said the community has been keen on improving their livelihood by adopting the modern methods of agriculture as provided by the project.

She added that her group has a majority of women who play a great role in the Maasai community especially on taking care of the livestock.
