The Turkana government is constructing houses in Todonyang along the Kenya-Ethiopia border for victims of conflicts.
Many residents face perennial attacks from suspected Merille militia from Ethiopia, forcing thousands to flee for safety.
The housing scheme is part of a county resettlement programme for displaced communities.
County director for peace John Lokoli said Sh10 million was allocated for the resettlement scheme in Todonyang.
The 20 mud houses will be cemented upon completion along the shores of Lake Turkana and will accommodate 60 families.
Lokoli said resettlement is also being done in Liwani, Lorus and Natodomeri in Turkana North.
Governor Josphat Nanok promised an end to insecurity in Todonyang following resettlement.
“With assured security, improved cross-border infrastructure, Todonyang has the potential to grow into a thriving border town and a hub of regional trade and transport.
"The Todonyang resettlement scheme situated at the shores of Lake Turkana, close to the Kenya-Ethiopia border, will benefit 60 households from communities displaced from their ancestral land due to perennial insecurity,” he said.
The governor spoke during a development tour of Turkana North to inspect projects.
In 2011, a massacre was reported in Todonyang when the militia killed 37 Turkana pastoralists inside Kenyan territory, according to government reports.
The herders were returning home from trading at the border point.
Peter Ereng, 55, a resident of Todonyang, recounted the ordeal that led to internal displacement of people besides claiming lives.
“I vividly recall how the incident happened. It’s sad to see your loved one being butchered alive. I couldn’t help. Everybody was running for dear life. It’s one of the worst incidents I have ever encountered in my life,” he said.
Ereng said since the attacks were persistent, they were forced flee the area and seek refuge in other parts.
He said he lost livestock that are main source of livelihood and since then making survival has been a big challenge.
Esther Ekai, another resident of Todonyang, decried the attacks by Merille militia that forced them to flee their homes yet they depended on fishing in Lake Turkana as source of livelihood.
She thanked the county and national governments for restoring peace in the region and for the resettlement that gives them hope again.
