Girls and young women clean California market, Lodwar, Turkana county.

Plastic water bottles are littered everywhere.

The Girl Guide Association on Sunday said  hot temperatures in Turkana make more people drink water and pollute by tossing plastic bottles.

The Association works for the development of girls and young women.

It is educating people to help end plastic pollution and instead to recycle.

Joyce Kariuki, programmes and training manager for Girl Guide Association, said for the past week they have been training girls and women on entrepreneurship so they can be responsible citizens.

It has been working in colleges and universities.

Kariuki said with the help of Unicef and the Turkana county government they ended their activities by cleaning up Lodwar town  on Sunday.

Sheila Itsambaru, the Guides' programmes and training coordinator, said they are working with the Turkana government and Unep to end pollution.

She said they want to help traders and young people find creative ways of reusing plastic bottles because burning plastic is bad for health and the environment.

“Lodwar is hot, people use many disposable plastic bottles. Burning them it’s not a solution it ends up producing carbon dioxide that affects the ozone layer leading to climate change," she said.
