Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital CEO Wilson Aruasa has been honoured by the Kenya Medical Association for distinguished performance in the health sector.
Also honoured was MP Dr James Nyikal.
KMA awarded Dr Aruasa for excellence in healthcare management in the country.
The awards came a week after MTRH was ranked the top brand in healthcare in the country following a survey by an international customer experience firm, Ajua.
The ranking, which is Africa's first Integrated Customer Experience Company, placed Nairobi Hospital second, followed by Kenyatta National Hospital.
Dr James Nyikal, who is the MP for Seme, was awarded for excellence in legislative reforms in healthcare.
KAM also honoured Dr Joanne Korir for excellence in Covid HRH management. Prof Julius Ogendo was recognised for excellence in medical education. Ogendo is deputy VC of academic affairs at the University of Nairobi.
The leadership in pharmacology award went to Dr Ibrahim Adamjee.
They were among those awarded during the KMA president’s dinner in Nairobi on Tuesday night. KMA president Dr Were Onyino presided.
Commenting on the recognition, Dr Aruasa said, “We thank God for everything. It's teamwork that has brought us God's blessings."
He quoted Jason Jennings, author of American Philosophy of Think Big Act Small, on how America's best-performing companies keep the start-up spirit alive.
"It’s the little things we all do every day, leaving no one and nothing behind. Think big, act small. Being keen on both the big picture as well as the details. It’s about being left-brained and right-brained at the same time. Being clinical, yet corporate too ... Let's keep it up!"
Last week’s survey recognising MTRH as the top branch in healthcare largely ranked customer satisfaction in various public and private institutions to help them improve on service delivery and business.
MTRH had a Customers Net Promoter Score of 32 in the Q3 July to September 2021, making it the best hospital in the country as assessed by Ajua.
“We are proud of the ranking and as a hospital we will always strive to offer the best care and services to our patients and other clients," Dr Aruasa said.
The ranking report indicates MTRH recorded the most regular availability of doctors, nurses and all other staff. The hospital also ranked top in staff courtesy, efficiency and good organisation or leadership.
The hospital is also performing well in proper and effective dissemination of information to the public through print and electronic media, among other channels.
“This demonstrates MTRH’s openness, transparency and accountability and we thank all media partners that have been working with us to ensure we reach the public effectively," Aruasa said.
The hospital was also ranked well in responsiveness and use of customer feedback for improvement of services.
Dr Aruasa said they were grateful for the support the hospital received from the Ministry of Health, the government, the patients and communities the hospital serves, the media and local partnering institutions including NHIF and Moi University,
The hospital serves more than 25 counties in the western half of Kenya and has partnerships with the counties led by Uasin Gishu.
It also has international partners including Shoe 4 Africa Foundation (New York, USA), Indiana University (Indiana, USA), the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, among many others.
With a bed capacity of more than 1,200, the hospital leads in handling diseases including cancer. It has continually expanded its services and facilities. It now has more than 65 ICU beds and has piped oxygen to all its beds.
The Ajua lists the most exceptional brands in nine sectors. KCB and Safaricom were also ranked first in their sectors.
