At least 2,000 residents of Turkana have received food aid from Super Metro’s Unique Crew members partnering with companies to cushion them from effects of drought and hunger.
The Unique Crew members belong to a public transport Sacco plying most major roads in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
The crew members donated maize flour, beans and maize to families stricken by drought and hunger in Kainuk in Turkana south.
The Turkana administration said the drought is at an alarming stage and has affected nearly 800,000 residents, with the Global Acute Malnutrition rate rising to 34.8 per cent.
David Maina, a manager at Super Metro and founder of the Unique Crew, said they have been supporting children's homes in Rift Valley, Central and Nairobi but because of the current drought they thought to provide food for hunger stricken families in Turkana.
Maina called on all Kenyans to support the less fortunate as a sign of sharing love.
“The crew have been doing these food drives for the last couple of years but this was the first time to take donations to Turkana county. Matatu crew members from all Saccos are welcome to join this association so that we can do more corporate social responsibility projects,” he said.
He said they are picking up from President William Ruto’s call on sharing with one's neighbours.
Samuel Aliwo, MCA for Lobokat ward, appreciated the food donation and thanked the matatu crews for remembering Turkana residents faced with challenges of insecurity, drought and hunger.
“We appreciate the effort of Matatu crew members for sharing love with us when we needed them most. Turkana South has been faced with challenges of drought and insecurity which has affected entire livelihoods of our people who normally depend livestock for survival,” he said.
Nancy Ewoi, a resident of Kainuk thanked the matatu crew members for the food donation.
