Nakuru County Government in partnership with the Ministry of Defence on Monday planted more than 175,000 trees to mark the National Tree Planting Day

The main event was held at Kabatini area, at the foot Ndundori Hill which is one of the major catchment area for the world-famous Lake Nakuru.

Speaking during the event which was graced by Defence Principal Secretary, Patrick Mariru, Governor Susan Kihika said 11,000 indigenous trees were planted along a stream that pours its waters into Lake Nakuru.

She said the stream was also a major aquifer for the Kabatini area and discouraged the residents from encroaching on riparian land.

She added that besides the major event, there were numerous side events in all the Sub-Counties where trees were planted.

"On Monday, close to 200,000 trees have been planted and Nakuru is on course to reach its target of planting 250 million trees in the national agenda of attaining 30 per cent tree cover by 2030," she said.

Governor Kihika said residents were given 5,000 fruit tree seedlings which included macadamia, pawpaw and Avocado among others.

She urged residents to take seriously the responsibility of planting trees on their farms and open spaces.

"Farmers should strive to have the 10 per cent tree cover on their farms to achieve President William Ruto's agenda of planting 15 billion trees," said Kihika.

Mariru said Kenya Defence Forces had a target of planting 80 million trees by 2030.

He added that KDF has been planting trees in their barracks and government forests over the years.
