Health workers at Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital in Nakuru have vowed to down tools until they get answers in the murder of their colleague.

They held peaceful demonstrations around the hospital singing songs and carrying placards to protest the murder of Dr Laban Langat and later lit candles in his honour.

Langat was an intern doctor at Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital (PGH) in Nakuru.

The health workers led by the South Rift Region Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacist and Dentist Union, Kenya Union of Nurses and Kenya Union of Clinical Officers threatened to on with the strike until they get a proper report on the death.

Langat’s body was found in a trench outside Margaret Kenyatta's Mother and Baby Maternity wing of PGH where he was working, on December 13 at about 7:00 am.

A postmortem report on the body ascertained that the young medic was strangled to death.

Kenya Union of Nurses Nakuru branch secretary, Rose Masta said Langat, 26, was dedicated and often sacrificed to work extra hours at the maternity wing.

“Cadres do not matter now, we are going to down our tools and push for Langat’s justice. We cannot continue working here yet one of us was murdered right here,” she said.

It has been established that Langat, a graduate of Egerton University was living within the hospital staff quarters.

Services at the referral hospital that serves seven counties were paralysed for the whole day as the health workers, in uniform camped outside the administration block.

His colleague, Dr Korir Rotich described Langat as a sharp doctor who came from a very humble background.

“His parents struggled to take him through school, he went through gruelling years of studying medicine at the university and was working hard to better his family’s status but a murderer decided to end his life,” he said.

He revealed that on Friday, before he died, Langat was conducting a Caesarian Section at the maternity which he finished at about 6:00 pm

“He was a very patient doctor, he has helped many of us, personally, he taught me how to conduct a Caesarian Section when I was posted to Nakuru,” said Dr Rotich.

The health workers demanded that security be enhanced around the hospital and the staff quarters saying that they could not save lives if they were unsafe.
